How to Preserve Organic Foods Better – as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. A few tips on how to keep your organic produce longer. I would start by saying that humidity is really important, especially for vegetables. So, you are going to want your fridge, if you are keeping it in the fridge, which I would think you would be, you want to have a little bit of humidity in the air but you do not want the actual produce itself to be wet. So, there is kind of a trick to it, but basically what you are going to do is you are going to get it fresh, let’s say from your local farmer’s market, and it might be a little bit wet because they have picked it up that day. So if it is lettuce, let’s say, what you want to do is, you want to wipe it down—I would say you want to wash it first, and then you want to wipe it down with something dry, like a paper towel, or something of that nature-and then you are going to store it in a sealed container. So, we use glass, so I would use a glass container with one of those Tupperware lids. You can use Tupperware, like I do not like using plastic, so, but use the glass container. Maybe layer the bottom with a piece of paper towel and then put the produce on top of that and then put a lid on it. That way the produce itself is dry but the paper towel is picking up any moisture that is still left on the produce after you have washed it, there is a little bit left, and then it actually will evaporate up through the produce in the container and …

Organic Food: Growing at Home Vs. Buying – as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. I guess I would say the only real con is that it is extremely laborious. So it takes a lot of time to garden and to grow your own food and to weed and to fertilize and to plant and basically the upkeep of the garden itself of whatever you are growing. It really takes a lot of time especially if it is organic because you are not putting any sort of massive chemical in there to just have instant growth or anything like that. And so it is going to take a lot of time from you. I would also say maybe the only other one is that with a farm you are going to get produce at its peak maturity basically because a farmer has spent years learning the trade, and they know exactly how long things need to stay in the ground, they have learned exactly what time to pull them out, how long to keep them. Even if the weather changes and all of that, they know how to work with that. And if you are not an experienced farmer yourself, or gardener even, that is going to take you years to really learn that craft. And so, that is kind of the other benefit of buying from a farm versus growing it yourself. And I guess there probably is one more, in the sense that farmers, because we have greenhouses and things like that, that we can grow things that you can typically get in season for yourself. So depending on where you live, you know, like we are in northwest and so we get a lot of rain, we do not get a lot of sun …

This video shows the Urban Food Farm from urbanfoodfarms.com It’s a complete greenhouse kit system with hydroponics, irrigation, soil-less growing and a very efficient space layout to grow organic vegetables and herbs year round. The greenhouse floor plant is 8×12. Normally the greenhouse walls are clear polycarbonate but since it’s been raining they are covered in condensation. We tried to show the inside of the greenhouse design and closeup of all the vegetable plants. Compare to the other videos taken 2 weeks and 3 weeks prior, the vegetable and herb plants grow fast. This video is from 12 it’s hard to believe it’s December, the plants are growing as if it was March. This video shows a close look of the tomato plants, all the herb plants like chives, basil, cilantro, mint and a few others, there are also cucumber, zucchini, squash, lettuce, micro greens and strawberry plants. Some of the plants we planted from seed on week 2 of the project and others like the older tomato and cucumber plants were brought from an older version of this vegetable hydrofarm. All of the vegetables grown are organic from hybrid seed. The greenhouse layout plan in this 8×12 hobby greenhouse offers 144 foot of hydroponic soil-less growing all done in coco coir.The combination of the greenhouse plan, the coco and the clear plastic walls allows this hydrofarm to grow as much as 6x more than the same space planted in the ground. Just a quick video showing how easy it is to make your own Nitrogen and Trace Element Rich Natural Organic plant and vegetable feed for the garden from Nettles. Simply pick a bucket full of nettles,new growth is best but older plants will do,then chop this up a little in the bucket and simply leave to soak in a bucket of water for around a week. After a week or so the leaves will start to break down and release the nutrients and trace elements and turn into a brown liquid. Then simply sieve the liquid and store. Use this feed on any plants or vegetables around the garden but especially leafy green plants like lettuce or cabbages as they appreciate a bit of extra Nitrogen. Dilute the feed so that it’s about the colour of weak tea and that’s about it. Cheap,natural,organic feed from the humble nettle.

www.ntv.co.ke Scientists have now joined the Genetically Modified Foods debate in a bid to set the record straight about what they say are myths being spread about GMO foods. The National Council for Science and Technology says that GM foods are safe for human consumption and want politicians to steer away from telling Kenyans otherwise without valid explanations. Addressing journalists at a Nairobi Hotel, the Scientists from the both private and Government institutions said that no GM maize have been imported to the country. But they however say that Kenyans need to support scientifically proven arguments to address the issue of food insecurity. But on the contrary, another section of scientists feel that the government needs to go slow before introducing the GM foods in the country for fear that there are documented health risks of such foods that needs to be first addressed. The Kenya Organic Agriculture Network feels that the country has options of importing non-GM foods from neighbouring countries for now, until all doubts are resolved.

After Oak Park City failed in its bid to charge Bass with violating a local ordinance for using her front garden to grow organic vegetables, no doubt put off by gargantuan media attention on the case, they are now pursuing Bass for a similarly ludicrous misdemeanor that carries an identical penalty, 93 days in jail, for owning unlicensed dogs. However, Bass’ dogs are fully licensed, the city is merely reinstating an earlier charge that Bass has already complied with. This tells us two things — one that the city is blatantly pursuing a malicious vendetta against Bass for making a mockery of their petty ordinances, and two that enforcement officials must have been spying on her before the unlicensed dog charge was invented. If you are buying locally, you know, either at your local farmers market or kind of a local produce stand, or even just directly at a local farm, you can buy things almost comparable to anything that is non-organic. And if the price is a little bit higher at the same token, you are actually getting more for your money, because of the fact that when you buy from an organic farm, especially a local farm, you are going to be getting produce that was cut that day or harvested within twenty four hours. Which means it is going to have a longer shelf life in your fridge, or on your counter or anything like that. Versus when you are getting it shipped in, which you are with food that is not organic. You are getting it shipped in from large places. It could have been harvested five days ago, and you have got basically two days of any sort of life left in it before it is going to start to go bad. I would also say another misconception is that, you know, organic farmers are just hippies, “We are just living the life.” We get questions here a lot like, “What are you really growing?” You know we are growing some herbal remedies here on the farm, and that is just not the case.
