Eat Healthier And Save Money!

Organic Vegetable GardeningI’m certain you, just like a lot of people, have been seeking to discover a method to eat healthier so that you can live a longer illness free life and, as always there are numerous ‘fad diets’ available which never produce the sought after results. You know the ones I mean, they state that ‘a certain type’ of food is bad so you should only eat another ‘type’ then the next ‘fad diet’ contradicts the first and so on and so on but you know, one of the best methods for people today to live a healthy lifestyle is to consume only wholesome, nutritious and organically grown foods.

Lots of us have investigated eating organic vegetables as well as the numerous advantages that can come with having a healthy eating plan that contains organic vegetables. The difficulty is that many of us do not really understand how to incorporate organic vegetables into our daily diets without spending a large sum of money. I’m certain you have compared the cost of organic vegetables with non-organic vegetables while shopping, I know we have.

Nevertheless, the choice to stay away from organic vegetables in favor of non-organic vegetables is difficult when it’s thought that organic vegetables normally taste much better and in the long run:

  • could cleanse the system while helping promote weight loss
  • lower your blood pressure
  • possibly even lower cholesterol

In addition, organic vegetables do not contain potential dangerous chemical substances which are frequently seen in the pesticides and weedkillers employed to help grow non-organic vegetables. Even together with these advantages it is still hard to warrant having to pay twice, or three times the price of non-organic vegetables, isn’t it?……but there is another way – organic vegetable gardening.

Consider Growing Your Own Organic Vegetables!

Why not start off growing your own organic vegetables right in your own garden? That should provide you and your loved ones with organic vegetables almost all year round at a substantially lower price than you would ever need to pay at the grocery store. Lots of seeds can be bought at your local garden center that would produce more vegetables than you or your family will likely need for the year and for only the price of the seeds, which is generally less than a couple of dollars!

Not only is growing your own organic vegetables less expensive than buying organic vegetables in the shops it is even cheaper than buying non-organic vegetables! Overtime you will come to realize that growing organic vegetables in your home or in the garden of your home works out even cheaper than buying canned or frozen vegetables each month. You and your family will be eating healthier whilst saving a good deal of cash. There is even the chance of generating some money if you have neighbors, friends, or other family members that might like to buy fresh produce from your garden.

Having all these points in mind you may be asking yourself why isn’t everybody on the planet growing their own organic vegetables. The answer to that question is easy.

  • Most people just do not know how to grow organically. In fact, The majority of people that do possess a practical knowledge of gardening at home are used to growing vegetables with the assistance of chemical bug killers, and fertilizers made in a laboratory. It is difficult for people who have already been growing this way for years to realize the advantages of growing organically.
  • Those who have never grown vegetables previously are scared of trying simply because growing your own produce can seem like an ambitious endeavor particularly if you have had no experience. Nevertheless, a lack of gardening or organic gardening knowledge is no longer a reason to give up the idea of having your own organic vegetable garden because there is a method to successfully begin your own vegetable garden even if you’ve never done it before

How To Grow Your Own Organic Vegetables

Organic Vegetables*Featured article from the Organic Liaison Blog

Everyone knows that eating vegetables is good for you, helps you lose weight, improve your health and so on, ESPECIALLY when they’re organic. Yet as much as we love our organic vegetables, buying them can get costly due to production and distribution costs.

Here’s a crazy idea – why not grow your OWN garden? You can save money on groceries, get some exercise while you garden and enjoy super fresh food. Eating delicious, organic vegetables means you decrease the amount of pesticides you consume and the amount of food you waste. Plus, you help protect the environment from harmful toxins and chemicals in its soil. AND now there’s absolutely NO excuse to keep you from getting your daily amount of veggies!

Even though it’s still winter, now is actually the perfect time to start growing your own vegetables. Here’s how:

• Planning is key: Think about what you eat and what you want to grow. There’s no point in growing green beans if you hate ‘em! Plus, you need to think about how much time you’re willing to spend. If you love gardening, you’ll probably still be excited about this project in August. If you’re more of a “great indoors” person, consider starting out small with herbs and plants you keep by a kitchen windowsill.
• Determine space: Apartment living is great, but you don’t have much space. Try a container garden or look into square-foot gardening. If you have a proper yard, figure out WHERE you want to plant your vegetables.
• Think small. The inexperienced gardener might want to start growing CROPS, not food for your kitchen table. Start off easy and gradually expand to more vegetables every season.
• Buy low, sell high. Consider the cost ratio of each plant. If it’s going to cost $10 to grow tomatoes, for example, but you really only eat maybe $5 in a summer, you’re losing money. On the other hand, if you love tomatoes, growing them will save you money in the long run since they often cost more at the grocery store.
• Sharing is caring. Consider sharing seed packets with family, friends and neighbors. This goes for a healthy harvest, too – if you’ve overrun with chili peppers, share your bounty with others as gifts.
• Compost. If you’ve got a little extra room, making a compost pile is an excellent way to feed your plants and keep your food waste out of landfills, where it will take MUCH longer to decompose.

Gardening is a great way to relax and have fun. Don’t turn it into a chore – your garden doesn’t need to be picture perfect, so long as you can reap what you sow. Just choose your favorite vegetables, fruits and herbs, and start planting! Get the whole family involved or use it to spend some quality “me” time. No matter how you garden, you’ll be growing fresh, inexpensive and ORGANIC food you and your family can enjoy eating.

closed canopy organic gardening is food forest prep

www.permies.com Michael “Skeeter” Pilarski shows off what he calls “closed canopy gardening” – the idea is to reduce the amount of sun that reaches the soil. You can hardly see the paths. This is an early phase for a food forest or for agro forestry. Already well beyond an organic garden. As part of his presentation, he talks a little about gooseberries, squash, (thornless) honey locust, calendula, mulberry, lovage, worm seed, peppers, dill, leeks, horseradish, asparagus, garlic chives, columbine, echincacia, pole beans, summer savory, lavendar, hissop, potatoes, burdock, grape, teasel, raspberries, black currants, chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus), hissop, erronia berry, radish, eastern black cherry, blue elderberry, silverberry, nitrogen fixing, seeds, seed pods, mulch, organic matter, photosynthesis, roots, plants, berries, fruit, bee forage, insect forage, trees, shrubs, wild crafting, legumes and thorns.
